Thousands of climate activists rush into coal pit just before start of COP23
On November 5th, 2017 more than 4000 activists from across Europe gathered in Buir, close to the coal pit „Hambach“ to draw attention to the issue of fossil fuels, especially coal, polluting the earth’s climate. Marching in 5 groups the activists pushed into one of Germany’s biggest coal pits. Police and RWE set-up barriers to stop activists from reaching coal diggers. Several hundred still managed their way through. On a plain in front of the digger police tried to cettle the crowd. Horses, pepperspray and battons were used against activists. Several were hurt. Also journalists were targeted by police. At the end of the action police transported activists out of the mine.
